I’m surprised by the fact that Mark Bauerlein seems to be unaware that online courses can have real-time (synchronous) components as well. His scenario of student and professor working over an essay together could easily take place in an audio- or video-chat session (one-on-one, just like office hours). It’s certainly not all correspondence in this age of broadband internet. Or maybe his concept of the information superhighway involves telegraph machines. STOP.
